Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Victory
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player delivered the decisive baskets deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored a team-high 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, giving the titleholders a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander said of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was raised at their arena, while the players were presented with their championship rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the chance to secure some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.
Elsewhere, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from sciatica.
